Manic Monday - Fresh

Fresh

Last weekend I took my MIL to the local Farmer's Market and I also brought my new camera. There are so many amazing sights and sounds and tastes. We had hot dogs and french fries while listening to a really neat band playing old time songs.

We both bought fresh fruits and veggies. She bought some incredibly fresh asparagus and I got some yummy apples.

Even the air smelled fresh. We could see over the water all the way to the Cascades but I didn't manage to get a photo. One of these days I will share how gorgeous this area is. It might rain and cloud up a lot but when it is sunny and clear there is hardly a place that can compare in beauty.

One of the vendors I buy apples from has the cutest sign that cracks me up every time. One of the only times testing on animals is great! :)

Interesting Happenings This Week - 4/28

So many interesting things happen during the week that I thought I'd start listing a few of them in case you missed them. :)

I have a coworker who thinks the oil companies are to blame for high prices. I doubt it. I do think the government helps keep the prices artificially high.

Save the Plastic Bag!

Eating Kangaroo? No thanks!

Make a little extra cash and shop at the same time! I've worked as a mystery shopper before. It's actually really fun. Hubby and I enjoyed several nearly free dinners at Applebees.

Maybe someone ought to have Pastor Wright meet with this guy......an ACTUAL slave in OUR time. That wouldn't really work with his white people are evil ideas though since it was other Africans enslaving him. I do wish we could help all those in need...what happened in the Sudan (and happening in Dafur) is a nightmare and needs to be stopped. This is part one of a three part interview series.

Who says that we're killing all the animals? The cougar population disagrees. We have cougars here. I think they are gorgeous but I wouldn't want to run into one.

Maybe we will have a recession...and maybe we won't. (We still have not had two quarters of declining growth.) I hate the self fulfilling prophesy that the media is working for though. If they say we're in one enough times maybe it will come true. But I agree with one commenter who says that if sales of Grand Theft Auto can be in the hundreds of millions we can't be doing that bad!

More economic good news - with 5% unemployment I just don't see how our economy sucks. Wall street seems to be more optimistic. And how to make Lemons out of Lemonade.

Traders are betting on the dollar again - first time in 3 years. Not that I understand how futures or hedge funds work. It's all Greek to me.

The Banality of Sedition
- I do find it interesting that we have a law on the books that is so rarely (ever?) enforced. Yet all those who break this law by calling for the violent overthrow of the government do so in such ironic freedom which allows them to speak and protects their seditious words. They would prefer a government like the Soviet Union where dissent was punishable by death.

Why we must win - not just the physical battle which goes better by the day - but the propaganda war. We are fighting internal forces, which is sad.

When we have kids we will get them vaccinated.

Kids need to skin a few knees. I agree.

Here's to another good week!

Camera Critters #4

A pretty little birdie visited us daily on our balcony in Maui last May. He had a bum leg and so we chased the other birds off and gave him bread crumbs. :) We enjoyed our visits with him.

Check out more Camera Critters.

Saturday Photo Hunt - Time

Another hard theme for me. I decided to not go for the obvious clock photo.

This is Trooper Bear when he was only 2 1/2 months old. NAP TIME! He was a very sleepy puppy with his new home and new brother & sister. :) He used to love sleeping on the bricks next to the fireplace ... he doesn't fit anymore. LOL

Trooper Bear and Tiger

What celebrity would your pet be? I'm Tiger Woods! Find out at Dogster.com

This cracks me up. Although I think Trooper is a *little* more rambunctious than Tiger. :)

Unique Gift Ideas for the Non Crafty Moms

I posted a few days ago about fun gifts for the crafty moms out there. I know from personal experience that not all moms are so craft-inclined. Mine included - though she is more talented than she will ever admit. She prefers gardening.

Does your mom love art? Check out this amazing piece of work by Shayla Maddox. It's fabulous! 100% of the purchase price goes to charity. If hubby's style weren't so completely and totally opposite of this gorgeously colorful piece I'd be saving up for it.

Does your mom like to write special notes to people? How about a combo gift. A gorgeous set of handcrafted hummingbird cards by Turtle Papers together with a hand turned wooden pen made by Wooden Pen Works.

And of course the ever popular jewelry! Of course, I am slightly biased, but I think my jewelry makes a pretty nice gift for any occasion. :) I just started selling these sweet Cherry Tree Birthstone necklaces and I plan to make one for my mom and mother in law. A slight twist on the birthstone necklace.

The large pendant (not listed anywhere but it will be $110 + shipping - you can contact me through my site or Etsy for one) holds up to 4 stones. The medium pendant holds up to 3 stones. The small holds up to 2 stones.

I'm also planning a bracelet option using the small pendant. Never enough time in the day to do all the things I want!

But while I like to think I am, I am not the only jewelry designer out there. :) So here are some of my favorites - with a wide variety of styles and prices for every mom out there!

Mud and Mint - Flowers and Bubblegum - $18

Lava Valley Girly - Faux Pearl Drops - $7
(I'm not a big proponent of "cheap" jewelry but this seller is an exception. She does a fabulous job and has come such a long way with her designs since I first met her. Her quality is not cheap.)
Is that enough to get you started? I wouldn't cry if someone bought me that first pair of earrings. *grin* Talk about drop dead gorgeous.

I'll keep looking for interesting and unique ideas for mother's day. There are still a few days left to get on time shipping.

Save a Puppy - Stop the Cycle

These sweeties, 21 puppies in total, are being fostered and provided for by Saving Shelter Pets (a wonderful charity that I love supporting). Their mama is being spayed and all the puppies will get their shots and treatment until they are adopted.

Read their story at HoundsGood and consider donating a few dollars to help with their care. Every little bit helps.

Survey - Commuting

I am lucky to get to work from home once a week but if I had a choice I'd work from home every day.

Although I would miss the interaction with folks so maybe I could start with two days a week. I wish!!!

And the Winner Is...

The random number generator picked 111...I counted and counted to get the winner...

...Drum roll please!

KELLY!!!

Kelly, I have your address already somewhere in my files. :) I will ship out your goodies early next week. I hope you love them! And I hope your leg feels better soon...Rachel Lucas has some great tips on fighting off dog attacks.

And I have another special announcement. All the comments and participation was SO wonderful! I can't thank you all enough for helping make this a fantastic birthday month. There were over 400 comments!!!!! Which for some blogs might not seem like a lot but for my little piece of the blog world is tremendous. :)

The top commenter was ...

Bunny B with 59 comments. Wow.

And first runner up is blueviolet with 47!

And they weren't lame comments...I think I only had one or two "please sign me up" without any other contributing thoughts. People took the time to read posts or look at photos. It's just incredible.

Oh...and the surprise. :) LOL I'm going to send Bunny B and blueviolet a little surprise. I haven't quite decided what yet but it'll be something nice. So, ladies I need your addresses. I e-mailed you from my hotmail account ... check your spam folders. :)

I hope everyone who visited in April will continue to visit and read my chaotic ramblings about random things. =) I plan to continue blogging daily...I enjoy it so much!

Lemons to Lemonade

In the past couple of weeks I've been accused of being unrealistic about the state of the world. Maybe. Or maybe I am just optimistic in the strength, imagination, and determination of the human spirit.

I wasn't tagged for this particular meme, but I thought it would be fun to share my own lemon to lemonade experience.

When I was 20 years old I started working for a local city government. I had taken the job after working for a State agency for 4 years. Yes, I started working for the State at the age of 16. When I left I was a secretary and in my youth and ego I wanted something more prestigious.

The city job was billed as a sort of Office Manager and Assistant to a Director. It sounded perfect for me - organizing, keeping track of travel and expenses, running meetings. I love that kind of stuff.

Unfortunately the job turned out to be less Manager and more Assistant. And the Director was a world class git.

In case you weren't aware, I am not prone to kissing butt. I don't care if you're the Queen of England. You're still a human being and I am not going to alter my personality to please you. Granted, I've mellowed out slightly since I was 20. I do bite my sarcastic sense of humor back much more now. Back then I didn't have a very good filter for my tongue. :) This guy thought his poo didn't stink and expected quite a bit of butt kissing. So we definitely didn't get along.

Plus, 10 years ago I was not really aware of how my Depression worked and affected me. Nor did I have any idea that I'd been diagnosed bipolar. No clue. So some of my behavior was probably a little ... off.

After 9 months I was being written up for taking too many sick days. Now, my sick days were mine. There were no rules as to how many I could take or that I had to bank any of them. Sure I took too many and I should have fought harder through my depression like I do now. I rarely take a sick day just because I don't want to face the world nowadays.

Then on Valentine's Day 2000, nearly a year after I took the position that was boring me to tears, I was called into my manager's office (I was managed by a different person than I supported) and fired. Yes, fired. I'd never failed anything in my short life to that point. Okay...well I failed shop class in the 8th grade. Otherwise I was an overachiever.

You can imagine how devastated I was as I walked back into my office (oh yeah, everyone had their very own offices...I do miss that) and packed up my things. I fought to not cry but it didn't work.

This was a very traumatic and turbulent time in my life. I had broken up with my long time boyfriend (5 years) the summer before, moved apartments twice, and had just started dating this really handsome State Trooper (now my sweet hubby), and was living without a roommate and had rent to pay. I was working my way through school, paying my own tuition and taking classes at night and on the weekends (I soon started taking online courses from WSU).

And then to get FIRED. First place I went was back to the State agency I had left barely a year ago. I don't think the HR lady ever really liked me so my odds were slim and there were no openings at that time for me.

So I trudged home and landed at my then boyfriend's apartment. I sulked for the rest of the day. Ate quite a bit of chocolate and some ice cream. Cried a lot on the couch. For one day.

The next day I hopped online and wasted no time in applying for positions around the area, including a larger city 25 miles away. I would never in a gazillion years considered leaving my City job and applying for a new job so far away. I wasn't happy in my City job but I hadn't even once thought about leaving.

On February 16, just two days after being fired, I got a call from an HR person at this company (Company A) in 25 miles away city. Could I come in right away for an interview?

Um...YES! Just tell me when and where and I'll be there. So I got set up for the interview and actually had another interview with Company B that same day in the afternoon. (I didn't waste any time in trying to become re-employed.) While waiting at the second interview I got a call to ask if I could come BACK to Company A in a week for another interview. Um...yes please. Needless to say I was a bit distracted during the interview at Company B.

Let me tell you, Company A's interview process is BRUTAL. I was only interviewing for a project assistant type role - sort of a cross between an administrative assistant and project manager. It's fairly low on the totem pole. And even for that role I had FIVE interviews the second time around. The first interview was a proficiency exam and HR manager interview. The second one started with the HR manager. Then one with the supervisor. One with a panel of the other assistants who I would be working with (these are the ones you really need to impress). And finally one with each of the managers I might have been supporting (come to find out later they were hiring for two positions at once and weren't sure who would work with who).

Less than one week after this second round I was hired. =) And eight years later here I am...in a new role (a little higher up) but in the same company. If I hadn't gotten fired from the City I would never have found myself here. It is one of the best companies in the entire country. And I'm not just saying that. We're actually ranked ... something like the 11th (or there abouts) best small to medium company in Fortune magazine.

I believe that everything happens for a reason - even the bad stuff. Even the really bad stuff. From the time I was fired I was out of work for 3 weeks. It was devestating and embarrassing. But it happened for a very important reason. I always think we should look for the lemonade when life hands us a lemon.

Now to pass on the meme.
