Would You Eat It?

I'm a little creeped out by this story of Stem Cell Fast Food.

What do you think? Would you eat meat grown in a factory somewhere? Is it "better" than eating slaughtered pig, cow, or chicken?

I honestly don't know how I feel, other than a little weirded out. I eat chicken all the time, nearly every day. But when I see the semi trucks going down the road with the chickens stuffed 2 or 3 to a cage I get sad. I still eat them. :) How else are they going to get to slaughter?

Would I resort to eating meat grown in a tube or a sheet? The thought makes me ill. I've been so adamant about buying free range, grain fed, no antibiotics/hormones, all natural and organic stuff lately. How would Grown meat jive with that? Sure it'd be more humane. But then wouldn't we have an overpopulation of cows, chickens, et al?

I'm curious what you all think.

I had no idea that something like this was even possible, let alone that it is already being developed in the lab. It sounds yucky, but if they can make it safe, free of hormones and chemicals, and best of all, no animals harmed for it's production, it may be a good idea.

Man, tough question. I, too, eat meat. I, too, am bothered by the trucks transporting animals to slaughter. If the PITA group should prevale, I would have to take my grandson to the zoo to see a cow, pig, lambs and chickens. What farmer or ranch would have a hundred head of cattle standing around just to look at. I LOVE all animals, and yes, it does hurt to think of the way they come to an end of their lives. Not very humane. But either way, their species will disappear if we change anything. Oh, trama, how strange you make me. Mike

wow i only thought of stem cells for research, but I guess if it can feed people... I hope it's done correctly? Always a tough call.

I agree with you - it sounds weird and I hadn't heard of anything like that being possible. We only eat free range, antibiotic free meats too. And I don't like to think about the cows and the chickens going to slaughter either, but in the end that is what they are here for- to be food for us to eat. I think we really need to be careful of artificially created "anything." It sounds very unnatural.

I'm kind of creeped out by this too. It's just not the natural order of things. I have a daughter who is vegan so I'm particularly sensitive to the topic but I do feel there is a circle of life and we are just as entitled to eat meat as any other carnivore would. That being said, I think we do eat too much of everything and I'm not sure that it was ever intended that we gourge ourselves with food. We're supposed to survive but we don't need to store up food within ourselves like hibernators. I digress. Bottom line, I'd worry about the safety of a genetically created version of anything.

I am all about the natural selections and cycles. I choose to eat meat, and I believe that's the food chain that we need to maintain in order not to have the world go off balance. If lab made chickens and cows, what's the next step? lab made people? NOW that's scary.

That's sort of what I was thinking too jenn. At what point does science go too far?

mike...I think some kids should be taken to see cows and chickens at a fair ... like urban kids. Some have never seen those animals up close and in person. It's good to know where our food actually comes from...besides the grocery store. lol

This is something I'll definitely have to process for a while before I can make an intelligent comment. Right now its too much for my tired brain to wrap itself around. After some pondering I'll have to come back to this one.

That just creeps me out... and I am not sure why.
